Serving the Mature HomeownerSuccess in Seniors Real Estate

Do I need a certification or designation to serve the mature market?

In this video, you will learn that designations and certifications have benefits but may not be what is important when working with the mature market.

If you are a new real estate agent, you may have noticed that some of your colleagues have a mile-long list of credentials behind their names. It might even look something like this.

Jane Doe, REALTOR, GRI, CRS, SRES, ABR, CCIM, CRE, MRP, LHC, RENE, RSPS, CLHMS, CSHP, CSDC, and more!

As you look at this proverbial alphabet soup, you might wonder, “How can I compete?”

So, not really understanding what all this means, you set out and try to accumulate your own list.

STOP!

Having a designation or certification doesn’t always mean getting more experience or better skills. And frankly, clients are not terribly interested in all your credentials – unless, of course, you are able to demonstrate exactly how they benefit THEM.

So, back to the question, do you NEED a designation or certification to serve the mature market?

The short answer is no; you absolutely do not. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need the training!

Working with the mature market is much more complex than a typical real estate transaction. This is especially true if the clients are making a needs-based move that they aren’t terribly enthusiastic about. Navigating the emotions and logistics alone requires a whole different skill set than is taught in real estate school.

Then, of course, there is the marketing issue. How do you find and connect with longtime homeowners, seniors, retirees, or downsizers?

Some programs that offer designations only teach how to find clients – they miss the mark when it comes to how to actually serve their needs. For them, it’s all about the money.

So, do you need a designation or certification?

That is up to you. The reason we offer certifications alongside our programs at SREI is so that our members know how to identify other like-minded people who share a similar skill level. It’s really not about using it to “sell” yourself, but it can be a way to open some doors that are otherwise closed to the typical agent.

If you are curious about the certification offered by SREI, give us a call or email us and we would be happy to chat about your goals and whether or not our program is a fit. If it’s not, we are happy to make recommendations as to other programs you may want to investigate.
