Have you ever wondered, “Why am I not hitting my goals? What am I missing?

Great question. I am going to take a stab at this and see if I can help you create a new paradigm related to goal setting and goal getting! When I got these concepts, everything changed for me!

Let’s first discuss goal setting methods…

Undoubtedly you have noticed that there are a variety of ways to set goals. I have heard coaches coming from a more spiritual or energetic approach say that you can just set your intention (goal) and then forget about it… allowing the Universe to fulfill your heart’s desires. On the other end of the spectrum, I have heard hard-core sales coaches say that you need to write out your goals and look at them daily (or multiple times daily). There are virtually dozens of methods that fall somewhere in the middle.

While all of these different approaches can (and do) work, in order to get results, something else is required following the setting of the goal or intention. It’s called ACTION.

Regardless of how you set the goal, whispering it to the universe in a chant with incense burning or in a 10 page business plan, nothing is going to happen until you take some action. This article presumes that you are already TAKING ACTION and are still not hitting your goals.

I am taking consistent daily focused action and I’m still not getting results!

Assuming you set your goals — it doesn’t matter that much how you set them — AND you are taking consistent daily action toward achieving them, there could be a few things going on that are somehow impacting your ability to manifest results.

1. Your goals are in direct conflict with your internal values, beliefs, or unconscious decision making.

You do realize that it’s your unconscious that runs the show, right? The programs we run, habits we have, and internal daily operational strategies we subscribe to are developed early in our lives (ages 0-7). Knowing this, if you are not doing the things you need to do, have low self-confidence, or lack motivation toward your goals, you must also know that your unconscious is getting in the way.

Your conscious mind is the goal setter and your unconscious mind is the goal getter.

2. Personal baggage is getting in the way.

I already mentioned limiting beliefs, values conflicts, and limiting decisions as possible causes for you not hitting your goals, but what about negative emotions? Reality check. Baggage (personal, professional, or both) from the past is a show stopper. It is critical that you dump that stuff and recognize that whatever happened in the past is in the past.

Here is the biggest challenge with taking out the garbage… some of it you don’t even remember! Yup. Remember, many of our current emotional and mental processes were developed during a time of which we have NO MEMORY. Just because you don’t remember it doesn’t mean it’s not there. It can be passed down generationally, from one lifetime to the next, or generated during your earliest developmental years.

3. Focus. Consistently and intentionally focusing on the intention.

Has there ever been a time when you set a goal (ex. I will get 3 new listings) and then saw a sign down the street from your house saying, “For Sale by Owner” only to drive right by it as if it wasn’t there? Basically what you just said to your unconscious (the goal getter) is that you weren’t really serious about wanting 3 new listings. Or maybe you set a goal to make more money this year. Then, while walking into the grocery store, you notice a penny on the ground and you just keep walking. Essentially you just said to your unconscious mind (who knows that a penny is $) that you weren’t really serious about having “More money.”

Your unconscious mind is like a 5 year old child. It needs very specific instructions and it expects for you to do what you say or it will begin to doubt your commitment.

Any of this resonating with you?

Steps to better ensure you will achieve your future goals:

(Note: The following considerations assume that you have written out your goals and are taking consistent action toward achieving them).

Get clear about what you value, removing any value conflicts between your core self and your behaviors.

  1. Take out the trash. Dump any old baggage. Forgive where forgiveness is needed and remove any negative emotions (anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt, anxiety, and limiting decisions) as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
  2. Reframe how you see, hear, feel and experience things. Open your conscious awareness to see the things that are leading you to goal achievement. Remind yourself that even obstacles can be (and often ARE) necessary to help you reach your goals.
  3. Make course corrections when necessary. There is no failure — only feedback.
  4. Love yourself. Listen to your inner and external language and realize that your physical body is a barometer for your emotions and thoughts. Say to yourself often enough that “people are pains in the ass” and realize that you may eventually develop a dandy case of hemorrhoids. Commenting that you “are forgetful” is essentially instructing your unconscious to forget things (5 year old child — literal and specific).

Say nice things to your body, your mind, and others.

This may be the first time you have ever thought about goal achievement in this way, or it may be something you have heard before. Either way, it is my hope that you take away at least one positive point that you can implement.
