In this video we will discuss five mistakes agents often make
when it comes to growing a sustainable and enjoyable real estate sales practice.

Successful Agents Don’t Make These 5 Mistakes

After having been in the world of residential real estate ourselves for thirty years and having coached, trained, mentored, and managed countless new and seasoned agents, there are consistently 5 mistakes we see real estate agents make. These aren’t technical mistakes or contractual mistakes. Those are actually easier to identify and fix!

These mistakes involve taking a closer look at both how you approach your business and why you’re in the business to begin with!

Below is the short version of these mistakes and how to avoid them. If this resonates with you and you want more detail,

  • Failing to Connect
  • Generalizing vs. specializing
  • Learning the hard way
  • Daily schedule full of distractions
  • Lack of purpose and passion

Failing to Connect

We have all heard the phrase, “Jack of all trades and master of none.” This is true in the real estate business for sure.  What would happen if you had a clearly defined target market or speciality and were seen as the expert so that people were calling YOU for advice and guidance? Wouldn’t that feel great?

It’s about far MORE than just a designation or a title, it’s about truly walking the walk and talking the talk.

Solution: Pick an area of real estate that lights you up. Maybe it’s a geographic farm or maybe it’s a particular segment of the market. Immerse yourself in it. Live it.

Of course, here at SREI, it’s all about agents serving mature homeowners – people who are downsizing, rightsizing, or simplifying and who need and want a little more support than the typical agent provides.

Learning the hard way

  • Too many agents are out there struggling to “figure it out” on their own. In today’s world where there are communities of people dedicated to helping each other succeed, why would you hang out all alone? Your brokerage may be great, but may not necessarily offer the support you need for your chosen path.

Solution: Surround yourself with people who care about you, your mission, and your success! Coaching (group or personalized) may be a good solution if you need more focused support.

Daily schedule full of distractions

Realtors often get into real estate for freedom, flexibility, and financial prosperity. Many end up with freedom and flexibility, but miss out on the financial prosperity. Inevitably when I am coaching people, they tell me these are their top 3 priorities in life:

  • Time with family
  • Successful business
  • Health and wellness

Guess which 3 things are usually NOT in their calendars? You guessed it.

Solution: Ask yourself what you value most. Now, compare your answers to what your daily schedule looks like. Align your schedule with your most cherished values and goals.

Lacking of purpose and passion

  • As we talk with agents from all markets we see the same trend. People are working and working and working, with no light at the end of the tunnel. They are feeling defeated, disheartened, and disillusioned. Without a purpose and passion, it’s too easy to become distracted and scattered, hiding out behind incessant and irrelevant Facebook status updates.

This ties back into a previous mistake – being a generalist versus a specialist. We find that our members who specialize in working with seniors and downsizers (and who go “ALL IN”) tend to reignite their passions. It’s about a sense of purpose. It’s more than just selling a house – it’s about serving people.

Solution: Use real estate as a vehicle for doing what makes you happy. Figure out which part of the job you love most and grow a business designed to outsource the rest.

reignite your passion!
